Hi! I’m Kristen. I’m a mom of three as well as a former special education teacher and department chair. I graduated from Elon University and then received my Master’s in Special Education from George Mason University. As a special education teacher, I was dedicated to advocating for inclusive and individualized learning environments that unlocked the full potential of my students. Having written and implemented numerous Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and Section 504 Plans, I understand the unique needs of each student and the importance of tailoring educational support to meet those needs. I spent several years as the chairman of the Local Screening Committee, where I facilitated open dialogue among educators, parents and administrators to ensure that the best possible support was provided to students with unique learning needs.
As a parent of a student who required special education services from a young age, I felt extremely fortunate that I understood the system (and all the acronyms!) so that the process went smoothly. I believe with the right support and knowledge, parents can be the best advocates for their student and ensure that their child receives the proper supports. When parents have a better understanding of the special education system, they are able to work more collaboratively with the school system. Through a positive working relationship with the school, students are able to fully reach their potential.
For over twelve years, I have met with parents who have seen their child struggle but didn’t know where to look for help. Whether you are seeking initial supports for your student or already have an IEP or Section 504 Plan in place, I can help you navigate next steps to ensure that your child’s unique needs are being met.
